Canada: Expectations and Reality

Before coming to Canada, I had many expectations. Actually, the thought of living here was first like a distant dream; hazy and blurred, my mind unable to distinguish the exact details, but successfully drawing a perfect colorful and cheerful picture of how things would probably go. When our moving date approached, we started doing researches, making thus the image a bit clearer, a bit more real. We looked up where we would stay when we land, where to buy groceries, what should we wear, how to get our papers done, the public transit itinerary… long story short, lots and lots of work! But in my head, it was still as though I’m diving into a magical trip, so supernatural and surreal. A trip out of this world.

You know that funny thing we all experience; when there is an exciting event ahead and we start speculating and knitting flawless scenarios out of the threads of our imagination. Pulling together pieces of a perfect puzzle that were scattered in our longing brain area. We picture experiencing life effortlessly, without annoyance, or hindrances, or disappointments. Imagining that the air will be purer and lighter in our lungs, the water sweeter in our tongue, the colors more vivid and sparky in our eyes, happiness is limitless!

That is how I imagined my life here in Canada.

I made a lot of sacrifices, and therefore was expecting something extraordinary and exquisite, that would make me gasp in amazement at every second.

It is ironic though, that even in paradise, as long as you are a human with all the psychological twists, all the physical needs, all the drama, the dissatisfaction after a moment of extasy… you WILL still feel the same. Things will become gradually duller, paler, and will eventually fall into normal. The new eye replaced with an accustomed one, the excitement replaced with routine, and dream with reality.

Life feels the same wherever you are. Moving to a new place won’t change life for you, maybe give you the freedom to learn to love other places and be adventurous. But life is what inside of you! You will bring it with you even if you go to the other corner of the planet. What are you making of life, that is something you can work on, improve, and alter.

So, before my little self gets used to this new country, I wanted to take a moment and appreciate the beauty around me, as well as the shocks I stumbled into; the good and the bad.
